July 2009- Roscoe's Chicken 'n Waffles in Long Beach, California

On our way back down from Malibu Canyon to San Diego, we exited the freeway in Long Beach for some gas. While Mellissa was inside paying for the gas I decided to ask a large black woman where the famous Roscoe's Chicken 'n Waffles was located. She directed us down Broadway towards the belly of this seedy beach town, to this questionable local eatery. Once we arrived, we were amazed by the fact that there were only a few tables taken. From all the hype I had heard I thought this place would be packed! Mellissa ordered a breakfast plate with eggs, bacon and grits, and I opted for the chicken and waffles. Our iced teas arrived first and the first thing I did was dribble it down the front of my brand new Surfing Magazine shirt! It was a bit upsetting, even though it was free with my new subscription. That was soon forgotten as our waitress arrived with our food. Mellissa was quite happy with her large breakfast and I was definitely stoked on my massive waffle, covered with butter and syrup. Next to this giant waffle was the biggest chicken thigh I had ever seen! It sounds like a pretty unorthodox food combination but it really works! We both enjoyed the friendly waitress and the delicious food. If you decide to venture on in to Roscoe's, just make sure you wear some loose pants because you will leave in a syrup and grease induced coma.
